EcoTree x Absolution: 10 years – 100 trees

To mark our 10th anniversary, we’ve committed to planting 100 trees this winter in the Cleden-Poher forest, in the Finistère region of Brittany. We’ll be doing this with EcoTree – a company based in Brittany that replants and sustainably manages French forests. That’s ten trees for each year that Absolution has grown. Ten years during which we’ve kept going further to get even closer to something that’s in our DNA : natural beauty. Those of you who took part in the workshops during our 10th anniversary event have contributed to supporting biodiversity projects in this forest. You’ve helped to protect its fauna and flora, thereby helping it to thrive.

100 trees of different species will take root in the Cleden-Poher forest: larch, sweet chestnut, Douglas fir, thuja and spruce. As 2020 gets off to a start, this former monoculture forestry area will begin to resemble a real forest as it becomes home to a variety of young saplings and the soil is enriched.

Part of this forest is within a Natura 2000 site – a protected natural area – on the banks of the Aulne. EcoTree has decided to contribute to this by conserving three hectares of unmanaged woodland. There will be no cutting, but some work will be carried out to maintain this future biodiversity sanctuary. The Aulne valley is home to a rich biodiversity, and three of the species emblematic of this region need our help to save their habitat: the otter, the Atlantic salmon and the bat.

Actions and benefits

– Maintaining the woody vegetation on the riverbanks so that the many otters in the river can benefit from a good habitat.

– Management of the riverbed, to preserve the salmons’ reproduction site.

– The trees and their root system to prevent the acidification of the water and improve its quality. They also fight soil erosion.

– Two environmental assessment studies will be carried out, five years apart, to draw up a list of the fauna and flora and monitor their evolution.

About EcoTree

Founded in 2015, EcoTree is a start-up from Brittany that’s specialized in sustainable development. Its main mission is to take abandoned forests and old clear-felled areas, with the aim of replanting them. It gives priority to trees that are adapted to the regions and mixing different species to promote biodiversity. Both individuals and companies can become tree owners and, in the process, fund the regeneration and sustainable management of French forest areas. EcoTree brings together sustainable development and profitability by offering the opportunity to do a “good green deed”. Behind this start-up is a real ambition to get the whole of society involved in regenerating France’s forests and to enable everyone to do something concrete for the environment.

EcoTree has continued to grow since it was founded. This year, it’s working with over 350 partner companies and over 20,000 individual customers. The start-up owns more than 600 hectares of forests in Brittany, the Limousin, Sarthe and Paris regions, and Burgundy. It has recently opened an office in Copenhagen so it can reach the Scandinavian markets.

Absolution x EcoTree

The Absolution forest (in miniature form!) was available for all to see when our pop-up store was open. Like a micro garden in the middle of the city, it was set up just in front of the pop-up store. Offering an escape from the urban jungle, it brought a breath of nature – which always makes people feel revitalized and re-energized, and does so much good for the body and mind! People were welcome to sit down, linger a while, indulge their senses and just enjoy the moment.

The 5 species chosen by Absolution

Sweet chestnut

The botanical name for sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa, comes from the ancient city of Castanis, located in what is present-day Turkey and famous for the quality of its sweet chestnuts. Sweet chestnut trees are easy to distinguish from other trees in forests. They’re quite majestic, and have long, toothed leaves that turn a beautiful golden color in the fall. The fruits can be used in several ways: to make a flour, cream, etc.

Douglas fir

The Douglas fir is a huge tree that can grow to heights of 100 meters in its country of origin, the United States. In Europe, it can reach heights of 50 meters. A Douglas fir can live for 300 to 500 years. In addition to its impressive size, one of this tree’s distinctive features is its needles, which release a lemongrass scent when rubbed.

Sitka spruce

This tree can be found from the Haida Gwaii islands to the most coastal areas of southern Alaska. It’s the species that best tolerates humid conditions, including within France. The needles measure two to three centimeters and are very sharp – unlike the needles of the common spruce.

Larch

While most conifers are evergreen, larch is one of the exceptions and loses its needles in the fall. A slow-growing tree, it takes 20 to 30 years to reach a height of three to four meters. Its maximum height is around 40 meters, and it can live for 600 years.

Red cedar

The red cedar is not a true cedar, and is related to the ornamental shrubs that make up many garden boundaries. This tall tree can reach a height of 50 to 60 meters, with a trunk diameter of up to three meters! It can live for 300 to 700 years.
